About This Item

Albany: Joel Munsell, 1867. First American Printing. Hardcover. Good. 8vo, publisher's mauve cloth, good copy, light ex-library marks and stamps, light wear to binding, spine dull, neat restoration to front outer joint, contents nice and clean. 275 pp. Notes and Appendix by Philip Bliss, edited by L. L. Williams. Reprint of an early 17th century book which was then republished in 1732, 1811 (the Bliss edition) and with hardly any changes between the 1811 edition and this one. Earle (1601-1665) was a clerk who was Charles II's chaplain. Earle's chief title to remembrance is his witty and humorous work, Microcosmographie, or a Peece of the World discovered, in Essayes and Characters, which throws light on the manners of the time. First published anonymously in 1628, it became very popular, and ran through ten editions in the lifetime of the author. The style is quaint and epigrammatic: "A university dunner is a gentlemen follower cheaply purchased, for his own money has hyr'd him." Many of the essays seek to apply universal truths by examining different kinds of people: a preacher, a physician, a college butler, a surgeon, a sceptic, a tobacco seller, etc.
