About This Item

Cowley, Oxford: Quekett Microscopical Club, 1998. First Edition. Boards. Fine. First Edition. vi, 226 pages. 8vo. Publisher's blue printed boards. A bright clean copy. No dust jacket as issued. Boards. The standard reference in the field. The first 105 pages are descriptive noting microscope slide makers, biographical information where available, and references to color plate illustrations in the rear plate section. Plages 106-225 are full color plates illustrated "almost 1000 preparations". Many people collect microscopical preparations today, and this is one of the few references that has any substantial information on mounters.

"I have tried to include all names of any note in this book, with descriptions and plates of their work: almost 1000 preparations have been illustrated in full colour at near life size. Some are clearly commercial, others amateur, and still others labelled simply by collectors; the only criterion is that mounts with their names on them are quite often found in collections. While some names have been ommitted, and information about others is clearly quite lacking, I concoluded that I should set out for others all that I had learned over the years, so the book is offered not only as a statement of what is known at the moment, but also as a basis for further work." (author's preface).

If you collect or are interested in this field, this is a must for your reference shelves. It has become increasingly scarce over the years.
