About This Item

Arte-Print, Brussels, 1981. Book. Near Fine. Wrappers. Foldout brochure-style folder with pop-up shooting gallery. Constructed of stiff illustrated paper. Dark horizontal scuff across the center of the front cover, but the interior is clean, crisp, and bright. The pop-up elements have not even been folded down yet. Text in English and Italian. The artist, Hugo de Kempeneer, had been publishing cartoons under the name of "hugoKé" since 1957. His contribution to the 1980 Venice Biennial as a shareholder of the Belgian arms manufacturing company was a shooting gallery such as is normally to be seen at fairs. According to the directions on the back of this folder, this mini version of his installation would have you "place the folder, opened, on the corner of your table at home. Then, on the other side of the table, sight your Belgian rifle at one of the political figures (in honour and conscience) illustrated, take aim and. have fun.".
