Ever since the Spanish Conquest, Mexico's most important industry has been mining, including in this general term the extraction of petroleum. At the end of the Colonial period, during one of the greatest eras of prosperity in the history of Mexican mining, the industry was organized as a guild, the Cuerpo de Mineria, which with its Tribunal General enjoyed a broad grant of authority from the King covering the fields of administrations, mining law, the financing of mines, and the education of mining engineers. In this work Walter Howe presents the first thorough study of the Mining Guild - how it was created, its history and what it contributed to mining industry and to the country as a whole.

In 1511 Aguilar left Panama on a caravel sailing to Santo Domingo, accompanying the procurator Juan de Valdivia. They were shipwrecked near the Yucatán Peninsula due to bad weather, but Aguilar, along with a sailor from Palos, in Spain, Gonzalo Guerrero, were two of fifteen survivors. Strong currents brought them in their ship's boat to the coast of the modern-day Mexican state of Quintana Roo. Aguilar and the others were captured by the local Maya and scheduled to be sacrificed to Maya gods. Number 1549 of a limited edition.A fort was built near the mouth of the Moose River on James Bay North East Ontario, Canada, by Charles Bayly, governor of the Hudson's Bay Company, in the early 1670s. In the struggle between the English and French in Canada, the fort changed hands several times and shortly after 1696 was destroyed. In 1730 the company built a post close to the ruins of the original fort. This post has been in continuous operation to the present day.
