Ever since the Spanish Conquest, Mexico's most important industry has been mining, including in this general term the extraction of petroleum. At the end of the Colonial period, during one of the greatest eras of prosperity in the history of Mexican mining, the industry was organized as a guild, the Cuerpo de Mineria, which with its Tribunal General enjoyed a broad grant of authority from the King covering the fields of administrations, mining law, the financing of mines, and the education of mining engineers. In this work Walter Howe presents the first thorough study of the Mining Guild - how it was created, its history and what it contributed to mining industry and to the country as a whole.

First edition.Lorenzo Boturini Benaducci, born in Italy of noble parentage, studied in Milan and lived in Trieste and Vienna. He was a knight of the Holy Roman Empire. Forced to flee Austria because of the war with Spain, Boturini arrived in Spain via England and Portugal. In Madrid he met the Condesa de Santibáñez, oldest daughter of the Condesa de Moctezuma. The mother authorized him to collect a pension due her, as a descendant of the Aztec Emperor Moctezuma II, from the royal treasury in New Spain. Boturini went to New Spain in 1736, where he remained eight years. During those years he assembled a vast collection of paintings, maps, manuscripts and native codices. He copied more than 500 pre-Columbian inscriptions and made his own drawings of monuments and sculptures, and he investigated the history of the apparition of the Virgin of… Read More

Reprint.Juan Bautista (de) Pomar (c. 1535 – 1590) was an historian and writer interested in pre-Columbian Aztec history. Based on references by Fray Juan de Torquemada, we can estimate that he was born in 1535 at Texcoco. He was the great grandson of Nezahualcoyotl, and was half-Spanish on his father's side. Considered noble by the Spaniards, he was able to obtain one of his great-grandfather's royal houses, known as the Netzahualcoyotl, in Texcoco. Pomar was raised as a Christian but learned Aztec tradition from his mother. He was bilingual and spoke and wrote in both Spanish and the native language of the Aztecs, Nahuatl. He is credited with one of the most important compilations of Nahuatl poetry, Romances de los señores de Nueva España. Pomar's major work includes an account of the Aztecs and Tlatelolcas Relación de Juan Bautista… Read More

xii+436+[6] pages. Octavo (9" x 6") issued in green cloth with gilt lettering to spine and embossed decorative stamp to covers. Preface by W H Prescott. From the library of George M Foster. First British edition. She was— it is no exaggeration— Mexico's Tocqueville, but if that ploddingly perceptive Frenchman's Democracy in America is one great boiled sausage of seriousness, Calderón de la Barca's Life in Mexico is a confection as strange and marvelous as Mexico itself. Stranger still in matters of (if literary) haute cuisine: the author was Scottish, née Frances Erskine Inglis. She married the Spanish diplomat Angel Calderón de la Barca in 1838; one year later they sailed for Mexico, where he was to serve as Spain's first ambassador to its still very raw and violent ex-colony. Revolutions, earthquakes, exotic flowers and snow-capped volcanoes: rich ingredients for even the most burn-the-toast kind of chronicler. But Calderón de la Barca is shrewd and skilled as any novelist at stirring in the… Read More

xvi+469 pages with appendix and bibliography. Royal octavo (9" x 6") bound in original publisher's brown cloth with gilt lettering to spine in original pictorial jacket. First editionFocusing on the fate of the natives under Spanish rule, the author traces in graphic detail the rupturing of Indian traditions and the fate that befell the Indian people. While demonstrating the excesses of the conquistadors and unscrupulous crown officials, he also emphasizes that Central America was the scene of the first attempt to apply the famous New Laws. Although that legislation was not fully implemented, the reformist judge Alonso Lopez de Cerrato made significant improvements in labor conditions, in the face of furious opposition from the Spanish settlers. Aside from it discussion of labor practices, this account deals with population figures and the extent of the slave trade, and corrects a number of errors in traditional sources. In addition, Spanish Indian policy, particularly at the local level, is examined… Read More
