About This Item

New York: Liveright Inc, 1933. Hardcover. Near Fine. First edition, first issue (one of approximately 800 copies thus). Slightest sunning at the spine, small tear on one leaf, still about fine lacking the rare dust jacket. American novelist John Sanford's copy with his owner signature on the front fly. Sanford was one of West's oldest and closest friends. They met in grade school and attended high school together. In the summer of 1931, West invited Sanford to share a cabin in the Adirondacks with him so they could both write; West, *Miss Lonelyhearts* and Sanford, his first novel, *The Water Wheel*. It was West (who had changed his own name) who persuaded Sanford to change his name from Julian L. Shapiro. West's classic satiric tragedy, one of the key novels of the 20th Century, of a male advice columnist who takes his job seriously. Loosely adapted into a comedy for 20th Century Pictures the same year, and then remade by Dore Schary in 1958 (his first independent production after leaving MGM) with Montgomery Clift, Robert Ryan, and Myrna Loy. *Connolly 100*. A nicer than usual copy, with a superb association.

Synopsis
