1865. unbound. very good(+). Sea chart in 3 sheets. Uncolored lithograph. Two inset panels on each page: each "panel" measures about 22 3/8" x 15.5", each page measures 27 5/8" x 34.25".

Great large sea chart plotting the path of 115 miles of the Mississippi River from Cairo Illinois to St. Mary's Missouri. Usually found in six separate sheets, this rare example has the panels uncut (in three sheets). It was prepared by E.H. Gerdes during the Civil War to provide the Union with information to control the river. The chart is beautifully detailed showing surrounding banks, towns, forts and topographical features. Alexander Dallas Bache (1806-1867) was an incredibly prolific surveyor, who worked as the superintendent of the United States Coast Survey. Minor aging along original folds. Partial border missing on left side of each sheet, though the losses appear to be original.
