About This Item

Tokyo., 1898.. Original green patterned cloth stitched with colour string in the Japanese manner, decorative gilt-splattered endpapers, white paper label with printed title in black to front cover, some staining to covers, lower corner of spine worn.. Oblong folio. (294 x 376 mm).. Leaf with printed title and 16 leaves with 19 photographic collotype plates in delicate colour, all recto only, each leaf with tissue guardleaf with printed description in English, final leaf with publication details (?) in Japanese.. A good copy of Ogawa's photographic record of a Japanese villa. The pictures illustrate the main entrance, garden, views from the house, the parlour, the tokonoma, the living room, and the home owners vast collection of Chrysanthemums in Japanese pots. Several of the images feature people, all in contemporary Japanese dress, enjoying quotidien activity. This copy also features a contemporary presentation to the front free endpaper verso: 'Presented to / Dr. Amos R. Wells / by / J. H. DeForest / of Sendai, Japan. / (Per Charlotte B. DeForest, / Kobe College, Kobe, Japan.)'. The recipient of the copy, Dr. Amos R. Wells (1862 - 1933) was 'long an advocate of temperance' and a 'pioneer and world leader in the Christian Endeavour Movement' (see his obituary in the New York Times); John DeForest was a missionary based in Japan, together with his wife, and their daughter Charlotte (1879 - 1973) became another.
