About This Item

New York: Simon & Schuster, 1960. Hardcover. Very Good. First printing, 1960. Quarto, cloth in slipcase, lacking jacket, INSCRIBED 'To Arnold Varga, with best wishes, Irving Penn' and also with a heavy large calling card from Peter H. Schub, Beekman Place, NY, 'with best regards St. Peter.' Book is very good with some spotting, smudging to covers, contents also very good, occasional finger soil, slipcase very good, modest edgewear. The recipient was a well known graphic artist in advertising, part of the 1996 Hall of Fame of the Art Directors Club and named Director of the Year in 1959 by the National Society of Art Directors. Photographer Duane Michals, a childhood friend from McKeesport -- a suburb of Pittsburgh -- recalled that he 'worked in this little steel town, without any real nuruturing and bloomed into a major talent.' So, a nice link between a fine arts photographer who occasional did commercial and advertising work with one of the major advertising men of his day.
