About This Item

Amsterdam: Wetsteins & Smith, 1733. Early Edition. . Hardcover. Good. Nouvelle Edition (new edition). Volume 2 only (of two). Full leather. 16.5 × 9.5cm, 320pp. French text. Not signed but with a previous owner's armorial bookplate to the front pastedown, dated 1755. An early edition of Marie Huber's 1731 Le Monde Fou (in English: The World Unmask'd, or The Philosopher the Greatest Cheat), in which the Swiss essayist offer a scathing critique of the philosophical establishment of the early eighteenth century accusing them of being more interested in their own power than in seeking the truth. This second volume contains dialogues 14 to 24 and the addition of two letter printed to the rear. Condition: The front board is nearly detached and there is light rubbing to the leather but the contents are in very good condition for age, with clean pages and secure binding.
