In 1890, Master Impressionist Claude Monet (1840-1926) bought a house in Giverny, outside Paris, and there created the perfect place to simultaneously indulge his twin passions of painting and gardening. At Givemy he transformed the house's extensive grounds into an artist's dreamscape of dazzling blooms and graceful greenery, complete with an arched, Japanese-style foot-bridge spanning a pond for his soon-to-be-famous water lilies. At home in his gardens, Monet found the colors, compositions, and sense of atmosphere that permeated his work and made him one of the greatest painters in art history. Photographer Elizabeth Murray has visited Monet's house at Givemy each year since the 1980s, when she participated in a major restoration of the famous gardens.
