Octavo. 286pp. Black cloth stamped in gilt with intricate decoration on front cover. A fine copy in very near fine dust jacket faintly tanned on spine, with two tiny nicks. A lovely copy.

Synopsis

Les premiers baigneurs, les matineux deja sortis de leau, se promenaient a pas lents, deux par deux ou solitaires, sous les grands arbres, le long du ruisseau qui descend des gorges dEnval. Dautres arrivaient du village, et entraient dans letablissement dun air presse. Cetait un grand batiment dont le rez-de-chaussee demeurait reserve au traitement thermal, tandis que le premier etage servait de casino, cafe et salle de billard. Depuis que le docteur Bonnefille avait decouvert dans le fond dEnval la grande source, baptisee par lui source Bonnefille, quelques proprietaires du pays et des environs, speculateurs timides, setaient decides a construire au milieu de ce superbe vallon dAuvergne, sauvage et gai pourtant, plante de noyers et de chataigniers geants, une vaste maison a tous usages, servant egalement pour la guerison et pour le plaisir, ou lon vendait, en bas, de leau minerale, des douches et des bains, en haut, des bocks, des liqueurs et de la musique. On avait enclos une partie du ravin, le long du ruisseau, pour constituer le parc indispensable a toute ville deaux ; on avait trace trois allees, une presque droite et deux en festons ; on avait fait jaillir au bout de la premiere une source artificielle detachee de la source principale et qui bouillonnait dans une grande cuvette de ciment, abritee par un toit de paille, sous la garde dune femme impassible que tout le monde appelait familiere¬ment Marie. Cette calme Auvergnate, coiffee dun petit bonnet toujours bien blanc, et presque entierement couverte par un large tablier toujours bien propre qui cachait sa robe de service, se levait avec lenteur des quelle apercevait dans le chemin un baigneur sen venant vers elle. Layant reconnu elle choisissait son verre dans une petite armoire mobile et vitree, puis elle lemplissait doucement au moyen dune ecuelle de zinc emmanchee au bout dun baton.
