About This Item

New York: The Free Press, 1986. First Printing [Stated]. Hardcover. Very good/Very good. xv, [1], 430, [2] pages. Index. Signed by the author on fep. George Frederick Will (born May 4, 1941) is an American political commentator. George Will writes regular columns for The Washington Post and provides commentary for NBC News and MSNBC. His awards include the Pulitzer Prize for commentary. Will served as an editor for National Review from 1972 to 1978. He joined The Washington Post Writers Group in 1974, writing a syndicated biweekly column, which became widely circulated among newspapers across the country and continues today. His column is syndicated to 450 newspapers. Will won a Pulitzer Prize for Commentary for "distinguished commentary on a variety of topics" in 1977. Will's columns are known for their erudite vocabulary, allusions to political philosophers, and frequent references to baseball. On March 19, 2017, Meet the Press welcomed Will back as a panelist, marking his 52nd appearance. In May 2017, Will was announced as an MSNBC and NBC News contributor. From a review posted on-line: "The Morning After" is the third collection of George Will's columns. It begins in 1981, the year Ronald Reagan was sworn in as president and the year that conservatives had to make fateful choices about taxes, spending, and the budget. A theme in several of the columns was the degree to which political correctness was already rearing its ugly head. Conservative speakers were shouted down on college campuses, and colleges were afraid to do things that members of designated groups might not like. The term "political correctness" may not have been famous until the Nineties, but the tactics were being used years earlier. The book includes columns on many other topical political and cultural issues of 1981-1986, and, of course, contains a few baseball columns. Will in some columns he writes about a specific individual, and this volume contains columns about such figures as Lee Iacocca, Brezhnev, Springsteen, Whittaker Chambers, Dickens, and William F. Buckley.
