About This Item
A beautiful first printing of the first American edition [Knopf NY 1964], signed by author Anne Tyler by way of a laid in photograph. The photograph is from the studio of Mark Morrow (NY 1981) and is a collectible piece in its own right, even if it were not signed by Ms Tyler. The book is in near fine condition with some rubbing to the spine but no remainder marks, a tight and square binding, a brilliant top stain, with no owner inscriptions or highlighting and no staining or marking. The dust jacket is in very good condition, not price-clipped ($4.95), with the proper date code (10/64). The jacket does have chips at the head of the spine and on one nose, as well as creases and light abrasions. It is now protected by an archival cover which is easily removable. Please do not hesitate to contact us for further information concerning this scarce book. So many first printings of Ms Tyler's first book went to lending libraries but not this one!
Synopsis

Set in Sandhill, North Carolina, it focuses on Ben Joe Hawkes, a self-proclaimed worrier who finds himself responsible for taking care of his mother and five sisters after his father deserts the family for his mistress and subsequently dies of a heart attack.
