James David Smillie (1833-1909) was a well known painter and illustrator in the late 1800s. He provided many of the illustrations in the Picturesque America, 1872-1874, edited by William Cullen Bryant. This two volume book was very popular in promoting tourism and illustrating the many different views of America. Along with essays are 900 wood and 50 steel engravings based on the country's well known landscape painters. It was sold by subscription of semimonthly parts that were later bound in two volumes.
