New York; (1964): Charles Scribner's Sons. First Edition. Octavo. First printing. 211pp. Hemingway takes you along with him through the streets of Paris, watching fishermen along the Seine or dropping by to visit Sylvia Beach to borrow a book. Hemingway lived in a small apartment on the rue Notre-Dame-des-Champs. He is reminded with vivid portraits of those he knew and of those he met along the way. The memory of Gertrude Stein providing little glasses of liquors, Ezra Pound boxing, and others including one of the more important portrayals, that of Scott Fitzgerald. This was the twenties in Paris and the story of his youth and friends. Bound in 1/4 rust cloth over marbled paper covered boards stamped in gilt, spine lettering gilt, a fine bright copy in an unclipped pictorial dust jacket with tiny old tape mends to underside of jacket. A very nice copy.

Description:
New York, NY: Book-of-the-Month Club, 1993. Hardcover. Near Fine/Near Fine. Clean, tight, unmarked; very slight wear to spine extremes; otherwise absolute minimal wear; Published posthumously in 1964, these sketches of Ernest Hemingway's life as a young man in Paris from 1921 to 1926 constitute a luminous love letter to a city and a now-famous era. Hemingway's portraits of such contemporaries as Gertrude Stein, Ezra Pound, James Joyce, and F. Scott Fitzgerald, as well as his evocations of his first years of marriage, glow with joy. "There is never any ending to Paris," Hemingway writes, "and the memory of each person who has lived in its differs from that of any other. We always returned to it no matter who we were or how it was changed or with what difficulties, or ease, it could be reached. Paris was always worth it and you received return for whatever you brought to it. But this is how Paris was in the early days when we were very poor and very happy.
