About This Item

New York: Orion Books, 1989. First Edition. Hardcover. Very Good/very good. Signed. Dustjacket has bit of shelf wear, panels rubbed; crease to spine of book, lower page corners 213-218 creased, appears to be a manufacturing flaw. First printing, full number line. Inscribed by the author on the front endpaper to the "men and officers of the 103rd Infantry Regiment on 4/12/89. The 103rd Infantry Regiment was a part of the 43rd Infantry Division, one of the principal forces involved in the campaign. The 43rd, recruited from New England, was totally green. It's men and most of its officers would first experience combat in New Georgia coming up against battle hardened Japanese regrouping from Gaudalcanal. Hammel calls it "a graphic study of the universal military truths attending the feeding of innocents to the ravenous dogs of war." However the Americans did turn the tide on New Georgia and began to push the Japanese back island by island. 8vo - over 7¾" - 9¾" tall. Hard Cover. Every effort is made to ship all books and other items within 24 hours. Clean recycled packing material will be used when possible.
