About This Item

Paris: Gallimard, 1939. Limited edition of Sartre's 1939 short story collection, containing one of his greatest existentialist works of fiction, The Wall. Octavo, original boards. One of 1,000 numbered copies, this is number 910. In near fine condition. Imprisoned in a cell, Pablo Ibbieta is offered an escape from his impending death sentence if he reveals the location of his comrade, Ramon Gris. Finding that he no longer cares about his cause or his life, Pablo refuses to cooperate until just before his scheduled execution, when, seeing no harm in it, he gives the authorities what he believes to be false information on Ramon Gris' whereabouts, only to find that Gris moved from his previous hiding place to the very spot where Pablo tells the authorities he may be found. Thus Ramon Gris is shot and Pablo's life is, at least temporarily, spared from death. The story is widely considered one of the greatest existentialist works of fiction.
