Book is tight, square, and unmarked. Book Condition: Near Fine; small stain to front board. DJ: Fine. Black boards and spine with bright gilt lettering on the spine. 442 pp 8vo. It's 1885 in Lunenburg County VA and a white woman is murdered with a meat-ax. Suspicion falls on a young black man who when captured implicated three black women who declare their innocence, a claim that gains urgency when a white man becomes a suspect. With the danger of lynching high and the Jim Crow system working against them, an improbable constellation of black and white supporters goes to work on the women's behalf. A clean very presentable copy.
