About This Item

The Detective Book Club produced volumes of three crime novels from 1942 to 1999. Originally monthly, near the end they dwindled down to just a few per year. Many famous detective and crime novelists had their early works featured in DBC editions. Often, books were published in DBC editions before, or at the same time as they were published in mass market form. A little about our authors:

Margaret Truman: The daughter of President Harry Truman, Margaret was a writer of fiction and nonfiction. Her mysteries were all in the Capital Crime Series, where she composed 24 novels. (The series has been continued by Doald Bain and is up to 30 novels to date.) Truman also wrote ten nonfiction books, including biographies of her parents. Thisis the very first Capital Crime novel.

George Bagby: A pen name of Aaron Marc Stein. An American writer of mystery and crime novels, Stein also wrote under the pen name of Hampton Stone. He wrote four detective series, the most significant one being the Inspector Schmidt series of 49 novels. All told, Stein published 109 novels. Stein died in 1985. This is the 45th Inspector Schmidt novel.

Bill Knox: Knox wrote under his own name and three pen names. He wrote two detective series under his own name, the Thane and Moss series (25 books) and the Webb Carrick series (15). There were three other series which he published under the name of Robert MacLeod, totaling another 22 books. He also wrote 12 stand alone novels. Knox died in 1999. This is the eleventh Web Carrick novel.

Synopsis

Margaret Truman has won faithful readers with her works of biography and fiction, particularly her ongoing series of Capital Crimes mysteries. Her novels let us into the corridors of power and privilege, poverty and pageantry in the nation’s capital. She lives in Manhattan.

Reviews

On Mar 2 2008, Irmocrone said:
This was Margaret Truman's first mystery novel. It was well written, with believeable characters and good plot twists. I clearly reflects her knowledge of Washington DC workings, and accurately reflects to tenor of the time in which it was set. Like Dickens, Truman's writing gives an insight into parts of society we would prefer not to know.
