GD (for age)* Jacket condition: No dust jacket. ND* Contents condition: PRIVATE COPY NOT EX-LIBRARY. Owners name to ffep dated 1905. Clean, crisp, tight and bright with only light reading wear, no marks to text, some marks and age darkening all edges, otherwise no visible faults. VG.* Illustrations: A number of b/w illustrations to frontis & within text throughout.* Pages: 479 pp. text. xviii pp., advertisements & blank pages at rear.* Description: This title has a long school-life section, but then it goes on to describe in rather frightening detail the life of a young clerk in London, trying to survive on a miserable pittance. He is living in a cheap lodging-house, and trying to keep up socially with his contemporaries. He is loyal to his friends, and in particular to his friend Smith, whom he had met at school, which had been a school for troublesome and backward boys.* A NEAR FINE text copy of the 1st/1st thus. with some cover age & faults reducing it to GD, without dust jacket.*
