About This Item

Viking, 1937. First edition. Some darkening to board extremities, surface soiling, endpapers toned, a very good tight copy in price-clipped dust jacket with some wear and scant loss spine and corners, light grease pencil marks spine, in mylar cover.. Beige cloth with pale blue illustration and spine title. A memoir, preceding the Caldecott Award-winning "Madeline" series of children's books, tells of his early days in the US after emigrating from Austria, and his time served in the Army.

Bemelman's illustrated dust jacket and chapter heading illustrations throughout. His bold ink inscription to Ervine Metzl, a friend and collaborator, and a pen and ink drawing repeating the cannon motif from the jacket art, on the half title page. His ink and gouache style of illustration and design is already recognizable in this early effort.
