Beaurand's friend, Theodore Benoist, goes into detective mode to unravel the mystery and the beautiful widow is under suspicion. Madame Henry Greville was the pseudonym of the French novelist Alice Marie Durand (1842-1902), active in the 1870s and 1880s.
