About This Item

London:: John Lane, The Bodley Head,, (1945). Hardcover first edition -. Very good in yellow cloth with red-orange lettering (piece missing front front free endpaper), no dust jacket. . First printing. Welsh poet's first and apparently only published work - a review in the Wales poetry journal of 1947 described it as "a little book of muted and imperfect music. Many experiences here collected have their roots in childhood, and others reflect the patience of long-suffering during war. An obvious influence in them is the work of Dylan Thomas. Nevertheless, several of these poems, in spite of awkward and unresolved tensions, promise a fuller achievement later on. There is an alert intentness in Each in his own Grim Darkness, in I, Christ, no Mother's Darkness and in Who yet has Jaundice in the Bone which merit attention. Levy is still self-conscious and confused about his imagery-but a poet can be forgiven much when he is young, provided he thinks to some purpose. Levy does." 47 pp.
