In his Preface, Haggard writes this novel is "beyond that of the setting out of a wild tale of savage life". He writes of a time when Chaka rose to miltary power among the Zulu nation, a time when he slaughtered more than 1 million humans until his fall in 1828. And evil genius, notes Haggard, the truth about whom this novel recounts. Other historic details, and some literary license, are included in the Preface.
