About This Item
New York: Oxford University Press Book. Good. Hardcover. 1st Edition. 1975, ix, 411pp, index. The very bottom of the covers have been wet, causing some bleeding through to the inside of the dust jacket, none on the pages, else G+ in G+ dj. Paraphrased form the dj: The author apparently had a life long fascination with Man as Name Giver. He examines the reasons for naming places from a human dimension, rather than by territory, language or type of place. For example, he is interested in who gave a place a particular name and why. And he studies how the name may have changed and why. He views a name not merely as a linguistic relic but as the enduring evidence of some very human activity-its origin subject to investigation and in many cases actually recorded in some journal or logbook. A very interesting study, which encompasses the whole world of place-names..
