Minor edge and corner wear, scuffed and scratched, corners are lightly bumped and rubbed, shelf worn, 816 is written in ink in the upper corner of the inner front cover, some light page foxing and toning, overall a clean used first edition! Tan cloth with a faded gilt design on the front cover and blue lettering on the spine. Frontis is a black and white illustration of Marie Louise brom the famous miniature by Isabey. 292 very clean unmarked and uncreased historical pages of text and 18 wonderful pages of historic black and white illustrations! "The story of Napoleon and Marie Louise is that of a middle-aged man married to a young woman, a dynamic and egocentric man trying to create from an unformed and naive girl the figure of an empress. He trusted her with state secrets, even with the regency, and, in themanner of a good bourgeois husband, expected her to be both loyal and clever. She was too weak to be either.". First Edition.
