Abridged with preface, biographical sketch, notes and comments. Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758) was born at East Windsor, Connecticut and entered Yale College at the age of 13, graduating, aged 17, at the head of his class, as valedictorian. He was tutor in Yale for two years, and in 1727 he was called to assist his grandfather at Northampton, and in the same year married Sarah Pierrepoint, daughter of one of the founders of Yale. Two years after his move he was left in sole charge of one of the largest, wealthiest and most cultured congregations in New England. In 1757, through the death of his son-in-law Aaron Burr, Edwards became President of what is now called Princeton University.
