Gilt title and decoration on spine. Much of the top edge of the text block is untrimmed. Original coated endpapers. Half titles in each volume. 8 coloured maps [3 folding], 20 plates [16 coloured, 4 tinted], 76 illustrations in text. Housed in a custom made slip case. Slight bubbling to the cloth on the boards, otherwise a fine clean very attractive copy. Hind's personal account of the surveying expeditions that explored the country between Lake Superior and the Red River, and between the Red River and the south branch of the Saskatchewan. Hind devotes considerable detailed discussion to the habits and customs of the Cree and Chippeway Indians. Chromoxylograph plates depict topographical views and scenes from Indian life. All illustrations are after photographs taken by Humphrey Lloyd Hime, photographer of the expedition, or sketches by John Fleming, assistant surveyor and draughtsman. Abbey, Travel, 630. Field 699.
