About This Item

12mo, contemporary ¼ calf, 144 pp. Binding worn and scuffed, two leaves torn with minor loss, second signature sprung and stitched back in, a couple of pages loose, and normal aging and foxing. Johnson (1730-1810) and her family we captured in Charlestown, New Hampshire by the Abanaki Indians in 1754 and taken to Canada. After spending a few years with the Indians she eventually made it back to New Hampshire, but first went to England and New York. Considered one of the most interesting of the Indian narratives, it was published in several editions between 1796 and 1907. The first edition is very rare, and the second is corrected and expanded.
