FIRST EDITION 1827, 2 volumes, complete set, 8vos, frontispiece portrait of the author in Volume 1, frontispiece portrait of General Yermolow in Volume 2, 2 folding sheets of printed signatures of persons mentioned in the text in Volume 1, another in Volume 2, plus in Volume 2 a folding panoramic view of Teflis, a folding plate of the Installation of Ashan Khan at Kazykoumyk, both aquatints, and a folding map of the Caucasus and Georgia, pages: xx, 1-380; xvi, 1-496, bound in 19th century half calf over marbled sides, raised bands to spine, blind stamped decoration in compartments, lettered gilt, edges marbled. Gilt worn off spines, slight wear to head and tail of spines and corners, very small bump to top corners of Volume 1, spine edges rubbed, marbled sides slightly rubbed, binder's tiny ticket on front pastedowns, faint offsetting to title pages, occasional slight pale foxing, mostly to margins, slight browning to upper margin of folding plates, very slight browning to 1 fold of Khan plate, otherwise a very good tight set. Don Juan Van Halen of Flemish origin, a Spanish mercenary, was born and died in Cadiz (1788-1864). He was appointed a General in Spain, and became in 1820 a Russian Colonel in the Caucasus and saw active service in various conflicts. He participated in and supported the liberal revolution of 1830 in Belgium, taking part in various battles. Since then he is considered a national hero by the Belgians. J. R.
