Oliphant served as Lord Elgin’s private secretary on his special mission to China and Japan in 1857-59. His narrative gives an interesting first-hand account of events, including the British bombardment of Canton and the siege of Tientsin. Chapters XXI-XXXII, pp. 301-476, are devoted to Japan.
