About This Item
From Wiikiipedia: George English was an American Marine was commissioned a second lieutenant. He sailed to the Mediterranean, and was among the first citizens of the United States known to have visited Egypt. Shortly after arriving in Egypt he resigned his commission, converted to Islam and joined Muhammad Ali Pasha as the Topgi Bashi (chief of artillery) in an expedition up the Nile River against Sennar 1820, winning distinction as an officer of artillery. Some historians have noted that "there is a high probability that he became a secret agent" and that his service in Egypt was a part of that intelligence service. He published his Narrative of the Expedition to Dongola and Sennaar (London 1822) regarding his exploits.
This volume is the frist American edition, published one year later than the English edition. Considering its age, the book is in excellent condition. All the pages, including the fold-out map preceding the title page are whole without tears or marks, except for a small tear at the top left corner of the last page of the appendix and a slight separation of the map from the binding -about the length of two inches. There is foxing on the fly-leaf pages and the inside of the covers but not on the map or textural pages. The cover has some chipping and other shelf wear at the edges and the leather spine has faded to the point that it is unreadable. The binding is still tight. There are two book plates : one on the inside front cover (with an inscription) and one at the first fly-leaf page.
The book has 177 numbered pages, followed by an appendix of approximately 60 pages.
