Deliciously rebound in black calf with gilt title to black and burgundy panels, and five raised bands, to spine. Untrimmed fore- and bottom-edges. Engraved plates all set before page 1, contrary to printer's instructions. Newer marbled endpapers. Bright, clean pages. Spine and hinges tight. Showcase copy.
Volume I: pp. xiii, [7], 458; Illustrated with frontispiece and three additional engraved plates and fold-out map (12 in. x 22 in.). Four inch closed tear along map seam.
Volume II: pp. vi, [4], 248, 1-146 (appendix), [8] ("Vocabulary of Indian Languages"). Illustrated with frontispiece and three additional engraved plates. Three fold-out charts (8.8 in. x 10.7 in.) of weather data for seventeen New England locations. William H. Keating(1799-1840) was the geologist and historian for Stephan Long's second expedition, exploring the headwaters of the Mississippi. "The work is almost a cyclopaedia of material, relating to the Indians of the explored territory..."
