About This Item

Batavia, New York: Adams and Thorp, 1827. Seventh Edition. Pamphlet. Good. 12mo. (7 1/4" x 4 1/2"). Disbound/Removed from larger gathering, remnants of cloth, glue and original stitching to spine. Lacks title leaf. Some stains to first page (heading: "NARRATIVE, &c."), and light tidelines from pp. 45-59, but not at all to obscure.

Affidavit at rear dated October 1826 wherein Matthew Bunn swears and testifies to the truth of the contents of his Narrative,
essentially notarized by "Millard (misspelled as Millerd) Fillmore" then "Com'r &c. for Erie County". Twenty-four years later, in 1850, Filmore became the 12th President of the United States. The final three pages of this (Seventh) edition contain a "Patriotic Song" composed by Bunn, entitled "St. Clair's Defeat".

This issue could either be the 1827 or the 1828 edition. "Matthew Bunn was an Ensign with General St. Clair, enlisting in 1791 at the age of about nineteen. He was captured in the Ohio Country by Indians, escaped, and was recaptured by George Girty. He gave Girty the slip and surrendered to the British garrison at Detroit in April of 1792. ... While on the run from his Indian captors Bunn did not obtain much succor from the white men he encountered, as they were British subjects and he was an ardent American patriot. (Evans 30136; Howes B952).
