About This Item

London / New York: Everyman's Library - J. M. Dent & Sons Ltd. / E. P. Dutton & Co., Inc.. Very Good- with no dust jacket. 1912. Hardcover. A 1912 reprint of the 1906 issuance. An Everyman's Library edition presenting the life of Scotland's Sir Walter Scott. Written by Scott's son-in-law John Gibson Lockhart, the biography originally was published in seven volumes, from which Lockhart fashioned this abridgement. Per Donald Armstrong Ross, this work is "regarded as one of the great literary biographies." Includes a brief preface by Lockhart. Everyman's Library catalogue no. 39 in their "Biography" series, edited by Ernest Rhys (who has supplied a short introductory note). --- In 'flatback' binding style 1, full ribbed grey cloth-covered boards with elaborate Reginald Knowles-designed gilt spine titling & decorations, blindstamped J. M. Dent vignette to front cover, brown topstain and fancy Knowles woodcut art at title page, endpapers & frontis. Volume lacks the dust jacket. --- With acidic staining to endpapers and a partial split near front of book (which doesn't affect the stability of the binding), otherwise a sound, unmarked, sturdy copy.; 16mo (6 to 7 in. tall); viii, 675 pages .
