Near Fine/No Jacket. 1837 FIRST EDITION, Nicely rebound with new end sheets, quarter bound with brown leather spine, bright gilt title to spine, marbled paper boards, Binding is Fine, illustrations by George Baxter, octavo, 589 pages color frontispiece, engraved folding map of Polynesia, 25 black and white illustrations and portraits, typical light foxing throughout. Rev. John Williams (1796-1839) was the ablest missionary to the Polynesian people, and this book was the most printed and widely read contemporary accounts. He was killed by islanders in the New Hebrides in November 1839. The color frontispiece featured a tattooed native of Rarartonga. This is an important early account of London Missionary Society activity in the Pacific. Scarce in this condition complete with frontis and folding map. A Superior First Edition. 8vo - over 7¾ - 9¾" tall.
