About This Item

London: Edward Moxon, 1840. Hall commanded the Lyra, a 10-gun brig, part of Lord Amherst's 1816 Embassy to China. The expedition visited Java, dropped off the Ambassador in China, went on to Korea & Okinawa, then back to China, and finally visited Napoleon, who knew Hall's father at Brienne. As Hall's interview with Napoleon mostly involved Hall's voyage (and because Napoleon was the Rock Star of the day), he felt it proper to include. First published in 1818; first edition thus, combined with the work on South America. Original full brown cloth, gilt spine title. Edges rubbed and faded, corners & spine ends frayed, spine faded, small spot on front, small stain on rear; institutional rubberstamp & ink note/number on front free endsheet, offsetting slightly to the pastedown, former owner's name & place on title page; text clean. Includes 'Accounts of [Captain of the Alceste] Sir Murray Maxwell's Attack on the Chinese Batteries, and of an Interview With Napoleon Buonaparte, at St. Helena. [9], 2-81, [1]; [7], 2-77, [1]; [5], 2-80 pages. The material on Central and South America is the sixth edition, also 1840, in two parts, hence the unusual pagination. Includes two maps. . Later Edition. Cloth. Good. 7½" by 9½".
