About This Item
In May 1820, the author, a seasoned sailor, set out on a sealing voyage aboard the Princess of Wales. The journey included stops at Madeira, the Canary Islands, the Cape Verde Islands, and the Crozet Islands, where the vessel ultimately met its demise. The survivors managed to endure by subsisting on sea elephants, penguins, and seabirds until they were rescued by the American ship Philo. They requested to be left on St. Paul Island, where they remained for three months before being picked up and taken to Tasmania. This tale of shipwreck gained popularity and was published in multiple editions. Contains 2 plates and a frontispiece where the author is depicted as a contemporary Robinson Crusoe, clad in sealskin attire, carrying a brace of birds, surrounded by king penguins, with a towering ice mountain in the background. Fair Condition. Original brown cloth boards with gilt lettering to spine. 3 engraved plates. Pen inscription to front pastedown. Newspaper clippings tipped in front front pastedown to recto of title page. Front hinge is slightly cracked. Front free end paper and frontispiece are loose. Pages are moderately tanned and foxed. Binding is mostly firm, except pages 49-56 which are slightly loose. Tissue guard covering plate facing page 51 is torn. Boards have minor edge-wear with minor bumping to corners. Gilt remains bright.
