About This Item

Square spine has a very subtle lean. Clean, unmarked interior. Only very light shelf-wear to the book. Jacket has several closed tears and chips, as well as a few small areas of light rubbing. 'I'm not a gay writer,' chronic contrarian Purdy once said. 'I'm a monster. Gay writers are too conservative.' Being published, he said, was like 'throwing a party for friends and all these coarse wicked people come instead, and break the furniture and vomit all over the house.' And: 'Critics would like to carry [my books] off to the shit-yard, [but] they can't, because they haunt people.' Often underappreciated by the American literary establishment, he was better received across the pond and by his request is interred next to the grave of Edith Sitwell, who helped him publish his early novella, 63: Dream Palace, in 1957. This first edition of Narrow Rooms, a book Derek Jarman attempted to adapt to film when he was in the process of dying, features a campily Michener-esque jacket design by Loretta Trezzo, better known for her surrealistic Robert Silverberg covers. 185 pp.
