Whittier, with letter by Whittier, dated 1865, inserted opposite title page.. Twelvemo, iv, 104pp. Publisher's paper wrappers. Bookseller description affixed to title page. Internally clean. Complete with 12 illustrations by White, Fenn and Charles Barry. Advertisements on back cover. Housed in quarter blue levant chemise, with light rubbing to spine, decorative gilt and raised bands. Letter is affixed to hinge of title page, dated 1865 and signed by Whittier. (BAL 21857). This is the third issue of Companion Poems for the People by Ticknor & Fields, preceded by Longfellow and Tennyson. From the New York Times (July, 1865): "This little volume contains some of Mr. Whittier's most heartfelt poetic utterances, on subjects that have claimed the consecration of his muse for many a year past.
