Foxed endpapers. This book has finely rendered and richly coloured plates on hawking, arabian racing, hunting, stag hunting, fox hounds, beagles, fox hunting, hackney, pointers, setters, spaniels, grouse shooting, partridge shooting, pheasant shooting, snipe-shooting, water sapniels, water-hen shooting, wild-fowl shooting, flapper shooting, bittern shooting, pike fishing, fishing in a punt, salmon fishing, cock fighting, bull baiting, terriers, crab, badger catching, spearing the otter, owling. Each plate has an English and French caption. The preface presents these plates as 'a collection of new and original drawings and descriptions on most of the sporting subjects, either formerly, or at present, in vogue in Britain, immemorially distinguished and celebrated as the land of sportsmen'.

1903 HUNTING Alken ART Sports Great Britain Horses Dogs Boxing LIMITED EDITION

Henry Thomas Alken was a prolific 19th-century English artist known for his caricature paintings of sporting and hunting scenes. Many of Alken's famous illustrations were published in a collection entitled 'National Sports of Great Britain'. This work is filled with color engravings of Alken's art – fox hunting, horse riding, hunting dogs, and many others.
This 1903 edition was published in New York; however, it was limited to 50 copies – an extremely limited print run and a very rare edition indeed!

Additional hand-coloured engraved title, 50 hand-coloured aquatint plates by I. Clark after Henry Alken. Contemporary straight-grained red morocco, covers with wide roll-tool border in gilt and blind and central emblem of a stag within a cartouche of foliage and flowers, raised bands forming eight compartments, lettered in second compartment, the others with an elaborate repeating stag decoration in gilt, gilt edges. First edition of Alken's most important work, offering a spirited discussion of outdoor amusements, with hand coloured aquating engravings of horse racing, angling, shooting, fox hunting, and 'owling', as well as bare-knuckled prize fighting and cock fighting.
