About This Item
This is a journalists' review copy, of The National Trust Book of Great Houses of Britain, by the British writer and politician Nigel Nicolson (1917-2004). It is a first edition of the revised edition; the book was originally published in 1965 and then was re-published in 1968. In 1978, Nicolson worked with the National Trust to update it and re-publish it. In Canada, it was marketed by McGraw-Hill Ryerson, who sent it to Canadian journalists to review; that review request label is on the front endpaper.
It is not the same as the original--8 houses were omitted and replaced by 8 others; new photographs were commissioned and National Trust archival photographs were added. There are 39 houses profiled (see Contents photo); Nicolson discusses their history, architectural features, artistic merit and the lore attached to them.
The book is olive green boards with brilliant gold lettering on the spine. 8 1/2" x 11 1/4", 288 pages. Heaps of photographs, black and white and color. It does not appear to have been read.
As you can see, the dust jacket has quite a lot of wear, but it has done its job. The book is pristine.
