Small 8vo (18cm) Frontispiece + title page + xx + 444 pp. Bound in green cloth, spine rebacked with original backstrip pasted back on, front board with gilt engraving, textblock gilt on all edges. Very small scuffs and marks to binding, previous owner's signature on inside of front board, frontispiece with small stains and a little edge loss, otherwise clean and bright internally.
John George Wood was a prolific and successful natural history writer and populariser, having given up his curacy to devote himself fully to compose multiple works on the subject. The present work went through multiple editions, this one is not specified, but dated 1866.
