Joseph Mallord William Turner RA (23 April 1775 – 19 December 1851), known in his time as William Turner, was an English Romantic painter, printmaker and watercolourist. He is known for his expressive colourisations, imaginative landscapes and turbulent, often violent marine paintings. He left behind more than 550 oil paintings, 2,000 watercolours, and 30,000 works on paper. He was championed by the leading English art critic John Ruskin from 1840, and is today regarded as having elevated landscape painting to an eminence rivalling history painting. John (Archibald Thorburn) Archibald Thorburn FZS (31 May 1860, Lasswade, Midlothian - 9 October 1935, Hascombe, Surrey) was a Scottish artist who specialised in wildlife, painting mostly in watercolour. He regularly visited Scotland to sketch birds in the wild, his favourite haunt being the Forest of Gaick near Kingussie in Invernesshire. His widely reproduced images of British wildlife, with their evocative and dramatic backgrounds, are enjoyed as much today as they were by naturalists a century ago. Archibald was born at Viewfield House, Lasswade, Midlothian, the fifth son of Robert Thorburn (1818–1885), portrait miniaturist to Queen Victoria. A clean and tight copy in original publishers delux full purple suede binding with oversized yapp edges. Gilt lettering on the spine. Front board with black lettering. All edges gilt. Previous owners neat name on the front free endpaper otherwise a fine and bright copy of this pretty book.

These are from the enlarged edition of 1817. The print measures 11.75 x 18.75 inches, with a plate mark of 10 x 16 inches. This is a hand colored engraving on high quality watermarked paper dated 1815 and made by W.Balston & Co. It is a beautiful decorative antique print expertly colored and beautifully composed. Curtis' work was the first study of British flora, and artists contributing to the opus included James Sowerby, Sydenham Teak Edwards, Francis Sansom and William Kilburn. This particular plate is quite bright and clean. The background paper color is lighter than my camera is portraying it, and is slightly off-white. Boards show moderate patina, wear especially to edges and corners. Prior owner's stamp on front blank, moderate foxing to title page and last few pages of ads, occasional smudge, no tears or folds. Hinges and gutters starting but should hold with proper handling. Paginates: blanks, 384, 24, blanks plus 12 unpaginated plates. All edges gilt. Please see images of the book you will receive. Notes: Popular British author with this title being one of his better known works. An example of early science fiction with a flying submarine. Green cloth, gilt embossed, with garden picture on front (happy to send photo as this is unusually lovely spine and front cover! ) Interior shows some foxing in first block of pages but otherwise clean and tight in binding. Former owner's name on front flyleaf. Sixteen color plates and 96 illustrations from photos. Color plates tipped in and overlaid with protective sheet with caption printed on it. Title page lists date of publication as 1910, no other dates shown. Overall a handsome edition.
