About This Item

Boston: James R. Osgood and Company, 1871. First edition, second issue. A copy with fine Boston and scholarly provenance having come from the library of legal scholar and President of Harvard University (1909-1933) Abbott Lawrence Lowell, member of one of the Boston Brahmin families and with later provenance of two descendants. With frontispiece and ten plates of illustrations by E. L. Weeks. 8vo, in publisher's original green cloth, the upper cover decoratively lettered in gilt, rear cover as the front but in blind, the spine decorated and lettered within a gilt panel. ix, 170 pp. A very bright and fresh copy, internally fine and clean with little evidence of use or age, the cloth in very good order with a touch of minor mellowing from age to the spine and rear but in all a handsome and solid copy. Charles Johnson Maynard's NATURALIST'S GUIDE is considered the America's first publication on a reliable and detailed method of collecting and preserving zoological specimens.
