The two volume set is a highly detailed review of what was the greatest of world navies. As WWII was about to evolve, the US Navy had two hundred destroyers, half of which were obsolete but by the end of hostilities over a thousand new destroyers and destroyer escorts had been added.. All technical details have been obtained from official sources and the author has added cryptic comments on their evolution up to, and during WWII. In addition there are many fine drawings showing the modifications to old destroyers that were relegated to subsidiary duties as appropriate.
