About This Item
London: Printed for T. Woodward, A. Ward, S. Birt, et al., 1744 - 1748. Second edition, considered by many to be the best. Revised from the 1705 first edition adding a number of new maps including one of Australia. Two folio volumes (approximately 10.5 x 16.5"). Bound in tan, full-leather boards with 5 raised spine bands and gilt-stamped black leather spine labels to upper compartments; title pages printed in red and black; text in double columns; frontis portraits ("Four Admirals") in vol. II; this copy lacking privilege leaf often found facing title page in vol. I. ILLUSTRATED WITH 61 ENGRAVED CHARTS, PLATES AND MAPS, INCLUDING 15 FOLDING MAPS. All of which have been collated using the list of engraved plates at rear of vol. II, revealing the occasional misplacement or reversal but showing all plates to be present and accounted for. Some staining to vol. I title page which is worn along the edges, list of plates at rear of vol. II somewhat soiled and stained and with touch of wear to edges; otherwise, barring the occasional small tear or corner chip, contents are relatively free of edge wear. Damp staining to inner hinges and edges of first dozen or so pages (including first folding map "Chart of All the Known World") visible diminishingly through first 150 pages; otherwise there is only scattered and occasional staining throughout. Also showing some offset from plates to opposing pages including at times faint shadows from one portion of a folding map to another. Still, altogether a very good set in relatively fresh, very sound bindings.
