Witteb(ergae), Impensis Andreae Hartmanni, 1660.. FIRST EDITION 1660, Latin, German, Greek and Hebrew text in Roman and Black Letter. small 12mo, approximately 130 x 70 mm, 5 x 2¾ inches, engraved pictorial title page, showing the Kings Solomon and Hiram and below a scene of ships before a harbour at Chersonesus Aurea, pages: [96], 1-826, (2 - Epilogus), final leaf of prelims is blank, contemporary calf, rebacked to style, no lettering or label. Original covers pitted and slightly worn at corners, inner paper hinges neatly repaired, armorial bookplate of the Earls of Macclesfield with motto "Sapere Aude" on front pastedown, Earls of Macclesfield bookplate and North Library label dated 1860 on front endpaper, small blind-stamp of the arms to top of title page and following page, fore-edge margin of title page trimmed off, not affecting image, pages browned and foxed throughout, all easily legible, very small piece missing from 2 lower corners, no loss of text. A good tight copy. Martin Lipen (1630 - 1692) was a German teacher and bibliographer. His book which is full of biblical references is chiefly concerned with the history of navigation but he tackles many subjects including Solomon, King of Israel, the location of the mysterious Ophir (Asia, Africa, South America?), gems and precious stones, animals (elephants and ivory, monkeys, peacocks, and parrots, all apparently brought to King Solomon from Ophir).
