About This Item

Campinas, SP: Editorial UNICAMP, Universidade Estadual de Campinas, 2010. b/w, duo tone and color plates, ports., facs., plan., bibl. (p. 265-288), duo tone pict. fldg. wrps., duo tone pict. d.j. OCLC: 656365530. The main intention of this vast documental work is to study the representations and auto-representations of black people produced in photographic studios all over Brazil during the second half of the 19th century analyzing the racial discrimination preconceptions of the Europen dominating society. The author traces the history, meaning, circulation, and storage means of the photos of libertos (free blacks), enslaved domestic servants and prisoners, organized in 3 main categories: first, the photos of domestic slaves who had been taken to the studios by their "owners", meant for their family albums; second, the ethnographic "exotic" photographs sold as souvenir to foreigners; and third, the anthropological photographs produced to support the racist theories very much in vogue then. The last chapter deals with the photos of the prisoners of 2 albums from the "Galeria de condenados" (Gallery of convicts) of the first prison constructed in Brazil. "This book is a slightly revised and reduced version of my doctorate thesis in multimedia, defended in the Instituto de Arte of Unicamp (SP), in December of 2006."-P. [9].
