Philadelphia: J. A. Wagenseller. Very Good- with No dust jacket as issued. 1882. First Edition. 1/2 leather. Chromo-lithograph plates; 4to 11" - 13" tall; 300 pages; 1882 J. A. Wagenseller, Philadelphia. 1st edition. Soundly bound in period 1/2 pebbled leather and marbled paper covered boards. Boards are thick and heavy with beveled edges. Spine in 6 compartments with 5 raised bands; compartments detailed with extra gilt and bands rolled. All edges gilt. Illustrated with 51 chromolithograph color plates together with chromo title page, all with tissue guards intact and neat. Chromolitho title page bright and clean but tissue guard foxed. Light scuffing and rubbing to leather over the joints, corners and raised bands. Corners with bumping and rub through of the leather. Some signatures starting. Plates are generally quite fresh and bright with a few scattered plates exhibiting light foxing to plate and heavier foxing to tissue guard. Pages 82 -84 and Plate XV have an instance of soling mid page, almost imperceptible on the plate. Superficial toning to page stock edges and some mild offsetting from the plates to adjacent leaves of text (despite tissue guards). Table of contents lists several (4) preliminary plates, only 1 of which is present in this copy. Sound and clean. About VG .
